Boston

The Boston office overlooks historic Faneuil Hall, the Financial District, Boston Harbor and the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge. The city of Boston is the economic and cultural hub of New England and the world-renowned home to many academic institutions. Boston and New England provide an atmosphere rich with cultural diversions, the beauty of New England seascapes, mountains and trails, and the home to a host of sports teams, including the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox and historic Fenway Park. Boston provides a wide range of opportunities, both from a legal practice perspective and in terms of the culture and history long associated with the city.

Established in 1918, our Boston office has grown—throughout its more than eighty-five-year history—from a five-lawyer office to a diverse practice of more than 350 lawyers who serve an ever-expanding national and international client base. Our clients range from established industry leaders to emerging companies that reflect the New England region’s strength as one of the premier technology and life science centers in the country.

Our Boston office is a hub for the firm’s litigation, white-collar criminal defense and investigations, corporate and intellectual property practices. Our corporate and securities litigation practice is a New England leader in the defense of technology companies and their officers and directors in complex shareholder and consumer class actions. Many of the core members of our renowned intellectual property litigation practice—selected by The American Lawyer in 2006 as one of the top four in the nation—are based in Boston, and have served as lead counsel in hundreds of major patent and trademark litigations. Our corporate practice earned Corporate Board Member magazine’s title of “top corporate law firm in Boston” for three consecutive years. Chambers USA 2006 acknowledges our Boston M&A practice with a first tier ranking, calling the team "Boston's primary technology specialist" and citing its "customer service orientation and broad-based knowledge." The Boston private equity practice is also listed with a first tier ranking and is described as a "phenomenal hi-tech practice that has enabled the firm to do a great job of cultivating key relationships in the private equity and venture capital space." Enriching our full-service capabilities by providing clients with the specialized legal and technical insight normally associated with boutique intellectual property (IP) firms, our IP practice was ranked as the largest in the Boston area by the Boston Business Journal in 2006.

Clients of our Boston office benefit from the expertise of other core practices such as bankruptcy and commercial, environmental, labor and employment, real estate and tax, and from the personal wealth and financial planning advice offered by our private client practice. In addition to actively contributing to our strong tradition of pro bono representation, our Boston office is a major center for the firm’s Youth and Education Initiative, a program of philanthropic outreach based on the creation of innovative partnerships with select non-profit organizations dedicated to serving inner-city youth.
